College Grads -- Land That First Job

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- There is some good news for college grads looking for that first job. Employers report they'll hire 19% more new college graduates this year than last year, and average salary offers will start at $50,462, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

That said, if you're looking to land a great post-grad gig, there are few things you need to do to get your foot in the door.

Tip 1. Network, network, network

First, make sure you're ready to network -- online and in person.

Hiring managers may look up potential employees on their social media sites, so get rid of any photos online showing you in any unflattering light.

Moreover, give your contact information a mature makeover by changing your e-mail address and voicemail greeting so they're professional and appropriate.

Also, stay in touch with your school's career center as well as their alumni office, who can help match you up with contacts in your desired field.

Leadership Lessons: Manage the Crisis By Brian Tracy

In a fast-changing, turbulent, highly competitive business environment, you will have a crisis of some kind every two or three months.

You also could have a financial crisis, a family crisis, a personal crisis, or a health crisis with the same frequency.

Take Charge Immediately…
When the crisis occurs, there are four things you should do immediately.

1. Stop the bleeding. Practice damage control. Put every possible limitation on losses. Preserve cash at all costs.

2. Gather information. Get the facts. Speak to the key people and find out exactly what you are dealing with.

3. Solve the problem. Discipline yourself to think only in terms of solutions, about what you can do immediately to minimize the damages and fix the problem.

4. Become action-oriented. Think in terms of your next step. Often any decision is better than no decision.

HOW TO READ BODY LANGUAGE

Has it ever occurred to you how much you are saying to people even when you are not speaking?  You are constantly sending messages about your true thoughts and feelings whether you are using words or not.

Studies show that your words account for only 7% of the message you convey. The remaining 93% is non-verbal. 55% of communication is based on what people see and the other 38% is transmitted through tone of voice. So think about it. In the business setting, people can see what you are not saying. If your body language doesn’t match your words, you are wasting your time.

Through movements, gestures, eye contact and facial expressions, you can read into a person’s truest intentions. As a rule, body language communicates more about what someone says than what his own words do.

People in the corporate world use body language interpretation everyday when they interview prospective new employees. In bigger companies, they might even hire a body language expert to sit in on the interviews so they can study the interviewee’s mannerisms and actions. When they read body language, they are looking for a variety of movements that indicate if the person is uncomfortable answering certain questions or talking about certain subjects.

As the old saying goes, you can't judge a book by its cover...but people do it all the time! Sure, it's unfair, but first impressions can haunt you forever. Like it or not, your attitude, appearance and overall demeanor say a lot about you.
